THAT: Upon the occasion of the retirement of Dr. Donald C. Taylor from the faculty of Montana State University-Bozeman, the Board of Regents wishes to express its appreciation for his service to the University, the Montana University System, and the people of the State of Montana.

EXPLANATION: Dr. Taylor has been a distinguished researcher and teacher of mathematics at Montana State University for the past twenty-six years. He received his Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of Kentucky in 1967. After receiving his degree, he was appointed to the position of Assistant Professor of Mathematics at the University of Missouri-Columbia. In 1970, he was promoted to Associate Professor of Mathematics. Professor Taylor was on the staff of the University of Missouri for six years. In 1969, he spent the year as a visiting researcher at Louisiana State University under the sponsorship of the national Science Foundation. In 1973, he was appointed to the position of Associate Professor of Mathematics at Montana State University, and in 1973 he was promoted to Full Professor.

The core of Professor Taylor�s research is in the area of functional analysis. He has had numerous articles published, all of which are in first rate journals. He has also published articles in engineering, physics, and statistics, which demonstrate breadth as well as depth. In 1976, the Memoirs of the American Mathematical Society published his critically acclaimed monograph "multipliers of Pedersen�s Ideal". Only six Memoirs were published that year.

Over the years at Montana State University Professor Taylor presented many invited papers at major conferences and universities, organized several conferences held at Montana State University, and has been an officer in several scientific and educational organizations. He has received many National Science Foundation research grants and has participated in numerous University committees. In recent years, Dr. Taylor has devoted himself to teaching undergraduate courses. He was the director of all of the lower division calculus classes and was instrumental in developing calculus reform.

For these and other contributions, the Board of Regents of Higher Education is pleased to confer upon Donald C. Taylor the rank of Professor Emeritus of Mathematical Sciences at Montana State University and wishes him well for many pleasant years in the future.
