ITEM 106-1501-R0100Approval of Proposal to Convert the Certificate of Combination Welding to an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Metals Fabrication Technology, College of Technology; Montana Tech of The University of Montana
THAT: The Board of Regents of Higher Education authorizes the College of Technology of Montana Tech of The University of Montana to implement an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Metals Fabrication Technology.
EXPLANATION: The addition of a Metals Fabrication Technology program will bring a different type of metals technology to the people of this region. The current metals technology programs in the state keep most of the emphasis of the program on the welding side, with a few classes on metals fabrication. The proposed Metals Fabrication Technology program will have all the American Welding Society (AWS) Level I certification requirements but will also have machining classes as well. The main focus of this program will be using the process of welding and machining to produce a product made of metal. Included in the program will be Computer Aided Design and Drafting (CADD) classes as well as some board drafting. A fast-paced industry is demanding graduates be skilled in the design and construction of a product.
