ITEM 107-1015-R0500 Resolution Concerning the Retirement of James A. Flightner, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and Professor of Foreign Languages and Literatures, Spanish, College of Arts and Sciences; The University of Montana-Missoula
THAT: James A. Flightner, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and Professor of Foreign Languages and Literatures, Spanish, in his 34 years of dedicated service to The University of Montana, has merited the commendation of the Board of Regents of the Montana University System, and has earned the title of Professor of Foreign Languages and Literatures: Spanish Emeritus.
EXPLANATION: James A. Flightner began teaching Spanish in the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures in 1962 upon completion of his M.A. After four years, he left to do his Ph.D. He then returned to the faculty of the Department where he resumed his teaching career in Spanish. He received three merit awards, was promoted to full Professor and was known for his vibrant excellence in teaching Spanish. Dean Flightner directed the Universitys Study-Abroad Program in Mexico and helped found that activity which continues today. He did grant-funded research on Unamuno and published on Cervantes. In 1983 he became Associate Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. In 1987 he was named Acting Dean and in 1989 he was selected as the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, a position which he has held until his retirement.
Throughout his administrative years, Dean Flightner continued to teach his courses in Spanish which were well received, particularly his Cervantes class. He is known as the prime architect of the General Education structure and has been a consistent leader in curriculum development. He has always been a firm advocate of the needs of the students. As Dean he fostered growth of new programs such as Native American Studies, Women's Studies and Ethics, and he maximized support to all programs. Dean Flightner has aggressively supported the hiring and maintaining of high-quality faculty, and he has provided mentoring and research support for all faculty. He has been consistently involved with the University College and support for student retention. He has served on University budget and planning committees in their various formats and is a respected member of the Council of Deans, known for his knowledge and forthrightness. As a Professor and Dean, he has served The University of Montana with strength and integrity.
In recognition of his accomplishments and meritorious service, the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures recommends Professor and Dean James A. Flightner for Emeritus status.
