ITEM 107-1019-R0500 Resolution Concerning the Retirement of William W. Wilmot, Professor of Communication Studies, College of Arts and Sciences; The University of Montana-Missoula
THAT: William W. Wilmot, Professor of Communication Studies, in his 27 years of dedicated service to The University of Montana, has merited the commendation of the Board of Regents of the Montana University System, and has earned the title of Professor of Communication Studies Emeritus.
EXPLANATION: Professor Wilmot earned his Ph.D. from the University of Washington in 1970 and joined the faculty at The University of Montana in 1972. Professor Wilmot has provided a model of professional balance and excellence throughout his career.
Professor Wilmot is the author of six books and many articles and chapters on interpersonal communication and dispute resolution. He is the former President of the Western States Communication Association. Professor Wilmot's work is often required reading in graduate and undergraduate programs, and he has lectured widely at other universities.
Always well loved by students, his former students will remember Professor Wilmot as a unique instructor who engaged, challenged, and rewarded them. Just this year, he achieved the distinction of Master Teacher, awarded by the Western States Communication Association.
Perhaps Professor Wilmot's greatest strength is the integration of theory and practice. He has conducted conflict mediation and consultation with hundreds of businesses, educational institutions, nonprofit organizations and governmental agencies. In teaching, scholarship, and practice Professor Wilmot has shown a genuine commitment to promoting positive interpersonal relations and a humane and rational approach to human conflict. This commitment earned Professor Wilmot the John Ruffato Memorial Award from The University of Montana in 1994, for the integration of University teaching with the community.
In recognition of his accomplishments and meritorious service, the Department of Communication Studies recommends Professor William W. Wilmot for Emeritus status.
