ITEM 108-1502-R0700   Professor Emeritus Status for Julie B. Norman; Montana Tech of The University of Montana


On the occasion of the resignation of Julie B. Norman, the faculty of Montana Tech of The University of Montana wishes toexpress their gratitude forher tireless service to the Safety, Health, & Industrial Hygiene Program, the College, the community of Butte, and the State of Montana by recommending the Board of Regents of the Montana University System grant her the rank of Professor Emeritus.

Julie was born and raised in Butte, Montana and, upon graduating from Butte Central she attended Montana Tech. She received her B.S. in Occupational Safety and Health in 1978. Next, she attended the University of Texas and received her M.P.H degree in 1980.

From 1978 to 1980 as an Industrial Hygienist for Shell Oil Company she provided consultation to Corporate Office functions and business centers. In 1980, as Associate and Director of Floyd C. Bossard & Associates, Julie continued her professional career performing environmental baseline and impact studies, and designing mine ventilation systems, industrial ventilation and air pollution control systems. As president of LeFever, LeFever and Associates Julie led projects that included risk assessment, industrial hygiene auditing, and training/education program development from 1983 to 1990.

In 1984 shebegan teaching for the Occupational Safety and Health Program as an Assistant Professor, and has since served in a variety of capacities including Department Head since 1991, Director of the Montana Tech Wellness Program, and Hazardous Waste Director. Additionally, Julie has been instrumental in obtaining ABET accreditation for the graduate program, and funding from NIOSH on a consistent basis. She has spent her summers developing the Extended Studies Program, and has consulted for numerous firms including CoCa Mining Company, ASARCO, Entech, North Dakota State College of Science, Cordoba

Mining Corp., Montoro Gold, and Carey Salt Mining. She is affiliated with the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists, the American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA), the American Academy of Industrial Hygiene, and is on the Board of Directors for the Pacific Northwest Section of the AIHA.

Julie's expertise and guidance has been an invaluable asset to her students, colleagues, and clients. Her extraordinary leadership and organizational skills have significantly strengthened the undergraduate and graduate programs of the SH/IH program. Julie's exceptional commitment has been evidenced by her decision to continue teaching and directing the program for over a year after her husband moved from Butte.

Sincere gratitude accompanies this recommendation for her years of selfless service to the Department, the College, the students, the community, and the State of Montana. Congratulations and best of luck in the future.
