ITEM 112-1502-R0701 Professor Emeritus Status for James F. Michelotti, Associate Professor, Computer Science; Montana Tech of The University of Montana
THAT: Montana Tech of The University of Montana wishes to acknowledge the retirement of James F. Michelotti for his years of dedicated and valued service to the College and to the State of Montana by recommending that he receive Professor Emeritus status from the Board of Regents of the Montana University System.
EXPLANATION: A native of Butte, Montana, Professor Michelotti earned his B.S. degree in Mathematics from Carroll College in 1966. He went on to receive his M.S. degree in Computer Science from Washington State University in 1972.
In November of 1973, Professor Michelotti began his long and varied career with Montana Tech starting as a programmer/analyst. In 1974 he became Director of the Computer Center, a position he held until 1999 when the Center changed to Computer Services and then to Computing and Telecommunications.
Professor Michelotti has served as Associate Professor in the departments of Mathematics and Computer Science, Business and Information Systems, and Computer Science, the position he currently holds. From 1988 to 1992, he served as Head of the Department of Business and Information Systems. He received tenure at Montana Tech in 1991.
During the 1991-1992 academic year, Professor Michelotti served as Acting Director of the Montana Tech Library. Since 1998, he has served part-time as the Director of Educational Outreach. In this role, he helped establish the Microsoft Certification Center, Cisco Training, and the Jump Start Program.
Known as much for his service to the community as for his contributions to Montana Tech, Professor Michelotti served as an elected Trustee of Butte School District #1 from 1986 to 1990, serving as Chairman of the Butte School Board during the last two years. In 1990-1992, he served as Chair of the Butte Silver Bow Local Government Study Commission. Currently Professor Michelotti chairs the Butte Silver Bow Recreational Board and serves as a member of the Sports Hall of Fame Committee.
In 1988, Professor Michelotti received the School District #1 Golden Apple Award. In 1997, he received further recognition with a Montana Tech Achievement Award.
