ITEM 116-1001-R0702 Authorization to Confer the Title of Professor Emeritus of Art and Humanities upon James G. Todd; The University of Montana-Missoula
THAT: James G. Todd, Professor of Art and Humanities, in his 30 years of distinguished service to The University of Montana, has earned the appreciation and commendation of the Board of Regents of the Montana University System and the title of Professor of Art and Humanities Emeritus.
EXPLANATION: James Todd received his B.A. from the College of Great Falls and his M.A. and M.F.A. from The University of Montana in 1965 and 1969, respectively. After several years of teaching in various positions in the United States and Germany, Professor Todd returned to Montana and started teaching in the Department of Humanities in 1970. From 1973-1976 he served as its director.
In 1980 Professor Todd became Chair of the Department of Art. He held that position for eight years. In 1988 Professor Todd once again returned to his full-time teaching as a Professor in the Department of Art. For the next 12 years Professor Todd taught courses in Art Criticism, Printmaking, and Painting. His insight, intellect, and artistic vision have inspired a generation of students. Professor Todd's expertise across numerous disciplines helped to broaden the artistic scope and vision of the Department of Art for many years.
As a researcher, Professor Todd ranks nationally and internationally for his work as an artist and for his work as a scholar. Numerous prestigious collections exhibit his work, including The Flint Institute in New York, Pennsylvania Academy of Art, Gilkey Center for Graphic Arts, Jiangsu Provincial Fine Arts Museum in China, Oaxaca Museum, and the Museum of American Art. He has exhibited his work in over 70 international exhibitions.
Professor Todd has further been recognized for his extensive published articles in journals, catalogs and papers, and for his lectures delivered on a multitude of topics ranging from art criticism to the history of printmaking to popular culture and propaganda.
For his many contributions to The University of Montana and to his profession, the Department of Art recommends Professor James Todd for Emeritus status.
