ITEM 119-1003-R0503: Authorization to Confer the Title of Professor Emeritus of Business Administration upon Gary L. Cleveland; The University of Montana-Missoula
THAT: Gary L. Cleveland, Professor of Information Systems, in his 18 years of service to The University of Montana, has merited the appreciation and commendation of the Board of Regents of the Montana University System, and has earned recognition as Professor Emeritus of Business Administration.
EXPLANATION: After receiving his bachelor's degree in physics from the University of Minnesota, Dr. Cleveland served in the U.S. Army for several years. Employment as a project engineer for industrial giants such as Honeywell Inc.'s aerospace division followed his military service. In 1981 he returned to Minnesota to earn an MBA. In 1985 he joined the School of Business Administration at The University of Montana to teach courses in operations management and management science. He completed his Ph.D. from his alma mater in 1986.
Only a few years after coming to UM, Dr. Cleveland was nominated for the 1989 Distinguished Scholar Award. In the short time since arriving at UM, he had published in the Journal of Operations Management twice, and in Management Accounting, and Decision Sciences. He frequently taught some of the most rigorous courses in the school to senior and graduate students.
In addition to his scholarly activities, he served on the School's curriculum committee, research committee, strategic planning committee, and the University's graduate council. For the last three years, he has been the School's MBA director and advisor.
Throughout his career at The University of Montana, Dr. Gary L. Cleveland has served UM and the community with distinction. In this dedicated service he has earned the respect of his students, colleagues, and associates throughout the University and the State of Montana. The Board and the University are grateful.
