ITEM 122-2003-R0304: Authorization to Confer the Title of Professor Emeritus of Microbiology upon Clifford W. Bond; Montana State University-Bozeman
THAT: Upon the occasion of the retirement Clifford W. Bondfrom the faculty of Montana State University, the Board of Regents wishes to express its appreciation for his service to the University, the Montana University System, and the people of the State of Montana.
EXPLANATION: Dr. Bond has had a long and distinguished career in microbiology. He received his Ph.D. in Microbiology from the University of Kentucky in 1973, and was a postdoctoral fellow in virology at the University of California, San Diego, from 1974-1977. From 1977 to 1978 he served as an Assistant Research pathologist at UC San Diego, prior to joining the Faculty of the Microbiology Department at MSU as an Assistant Professor. Dr Bond was promoted to Associate Professor of Microbiology in 1984 and Full Professor in 1996. During this time period, Dr. Bond also held an adjunct professorship in Virology in the Veterinary Science at MSU, was acting Department head from 1990-1991 and acting radiological safety officer in 1993. In recent years, Dr. Bond has served for a second time as acting Department Head (2001-2002), as Biosafety Officer for the Campus and as Microbiology's representative to Faculty Council.
Dr. Bond's tenure at MSU can be characterized as one of exceptional contribution to student learning, to research and to service both to the campus and to the State. In latter years, Dr. Bond has routinely taught over twenty credits each year and has made his research lab, equipment and supplies readily available for instruction in virology and in research methods. His course in infectious diseases has also been regularly taught in the Fall, Spring, and summer sessions.
Dr. Bond's teaching has been acknowledged by a number of awards and honors including: the AIRO outstanding Faculty award; Mortar Board Professor of the month; Certificate of Recognition for outstanding Service in the Field of Education; AIRO participation award; and the Anna Krueger Fridley Award for Distinguished Teaching.
Dr. Bond's research career has been in the field of virology, where in recent years he has focused on a critical health issue for Montana B Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome. In addition to peer-reviewed publications, Dr. Bond has been involved in public education through a number of interviews on Public television.
This past year, Dr. Bond's work on select agents and biosafety has been exemplary. Institutions around the country have struggled with the vast number of new regulations promulgated by homeland security, and in a number of cases faced fines and arrests. Throughout this time period, Dr. Bond has worked diligently with the Centers for Disease Control, the FBI and Principle Investigators on the MSU campus to ensure that regulations are both fully understood and that MSU has remained in full compliance. This has been truly a monumental undertaking and both the department and the campus owe Dr. Bond a huge debt of gratitude for this work.
For these and other contributions, The Board of Regents of Higher Education is pleased to confer on Dr. Clifford W. Bond the rank of Professor Emeritus of Microbiology at Montana State University, and wishes him well for many years in the future.
