NOTICE OF INTENT Approval to Change the Name of the Department of and the Bachelor of Science Degree in Metallurgical Engineering to Metallurgical and Materials Engineering; Montana Tech of The University of Montana
THAT: The Board of Regents of Higher Education authorizes Montana Tech of The University of Montana to change the name of the department of and the Bachelor of Science Degree in Metallurgical Engineering to Metallurgical and Materials Engineering.
EXPLANATION: Materials Engineering programs have been and continue to be added to institutions across the country to meet the need for graduates in this rapidly growing area. Examples include sister institutions in the region: Colorado School of Mines made the change 12 years ago, South Dakota School of Mines and Technology did it last year, and the University of Idaho reportedly will do it next year. The EAC-ABET program criteria for Metallurgical, Materials, or similarly named engineering programs are the same. Therefore, there will be no costs associated with the change. The change will also allow the program to better market graduating students to new and expanding companies in Montana.
