NOTICE OF INTENT
Approval of Proposal to Offer an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Diesel Technology; Montana State University-Billings, College of TechnologyTHAT: The Board of Regents of Higher Education authorizes Montana State University-Billings, College of Technology, to award an Associate of Applied Science degree in Diesel Technology.
EXPLANATION: The Montana State University-Billings College of Technology has an established Diesel Technology certificate program that has been in existence since the creation of the Vocational-Technical System in 1971. This proposed Associate of Applied Science degree program addresses impacts caused by technological advances in the diesel industry and expressed concerns of students and employers regarding competencies of the graduates. An AAS degree will also assist the graduate in upward migration should the students desire to continue their academic pursuits.
Since the creation of the original certificate program nearly thirty years ago, technology has grown at a rapid rate in all areas of the diesel technology industry. Necessary content has continually been added to the curriculum to reflect the needs of students and employers. Recently, Montana State University-Billings College of Technology has met the stringent requirements for the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence/National Automotive Technical Education Foundation (NIASE/NATEF), which certifies that the Diesel Department curriculum, methods of instruction, and lab/shop equipment are equal to, or above, the nationally recognized standards to provide up-to-date education in diesel technology. The industry needs workers who have an expanded base of technical knowledge, are conscious of safety procedures and demonstrate a good work ethic.
