NOTICE OF INTENT Approval of Proposal to Initiate a Master of Science Degree in Communication Disorders; The University of Montana-Missoula

THAT: The Board of Regents of Higher Education authorizes The University of Montana-Missoula to re-institute the Master of Science Degree in Communication Disorders. This degree was part of the inventory of programs at The University of Montana-Missoula until 1987.

EXPLANATION: The University of Montana was the only institution of higher education offering professional preparation for speech pathology in the State of Montana until 1987 when the program was discontinued due to financial exigency. Speech and language pathologists working in Montana schools and hospitals must be imported from out of state to fill these positions. The need for these professionals has been well recognized and documented across the state. Authorization to provide this degree would allow for a phase-in period, during which time the University of Wyoming would deliver the program on the UM-Missoula campus beginning Autumn 2001. The Hill Burton Foundation provided funds to equip a laboratory and speech therapy facility as well as clinical spaces, offices, and equipment. These spaces still exist on the UM-M campus and will be utilized for this program. In addition, the Scottish Rite Organization has sponsored a speech and language clinic in the community, located at the University, which will be incorporated into the program as well.
